The 14 women and 26 men who made to the 2020 class of EuropeIndia40 leaders list came from all walks of life and represented 19 different nationalities

#EuropeIndia40, an initiative of EICBI which is in its 2nd year to discover Next Gen under 40 Europe India Leaders, covers the stories of 40 young leaders below the age of 40 and their contributions in promoting EU India / UK India relations.

2020 class of #EuropeIndia40 leaders was released virtually on 27th November as the coronavirus Pandemic had affected our plans to have a physical event in the year. 

For the virtual release ceremony, we had Leaders from British Parliament, European Parliament and Indian Parliament who participated in the ceremony. 

 

From the Indian Parliament, we had Mr ALPHONS KANNANTHANAM - Member of Parliament - India/ Former Union Minister/ Member - Standing Committee for External Affairs, Indian Parliament/ Time Magazine Top 100 Global leaders in 1994. From the European Parliament, we had Mr NICCOLO RINALDI - Directorate-General for External Policies of the European Union - European Parliament, Brussels. From the UK Parliament, we had Hon VIRENDRA SHARMA MP - Member of Parliament - Ealing Southall, Chairman - Indo-British All-Party Parliamentary Group and Lord WAVERLEY - Member of Parliament - House of Lords, the United Kingdom/ Founder - SupplyFinder, Portugal

Cllr Aarein Uday Areti - UNITED KINGDOM

Councillor -  Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea

Aarien Uday Areti is a London local government elected representative for Kensington and Chelsea borough and is the first Indian elected. He is the current executive member of BRICS forum and works with bureaucrats, MPs and MEPs on many UK-EU-India delegations and summits across the world. Aarien is a social entrepreneur and a managing director of a startup technology firm based in London. Aarien was also recognised as  “35 under 35 Young Leader in India-UK Relations” in 2018.

Mr Adam Pustelnik - POLAND

Deputy Mayor - City of Lodz

For several years, Adam was responsible for cooperation with investors in Lodz, the third-largest city in Poland- the fastest growing country in Europe. He worked in collaboration close cooperation with Indian business and played a key role in facilitation of economic relations between Indian and Polish business. After a brief stint in the private sector, he recently returned back to the public sector, to his city of Lodz, as Deputy Mayor. He is now in the process of revolutionizing the way local government can obtain financing for its projects from the market, the way it can attract investors and promote itself towards them. Companies from India and from the EU/UK are crucial partners in this journey.

Mr Ajay Singh - INDIA

CEO & Founder - Nimray

Ajay is the United Nations Environment Program's Awardee for Low Carbon Mobility. He is also Global Energy Awards winner from La-Monde France in Singapore. Ajay was selected as part of Young Leader India France Club in 2019.  Founded by the President of the French Republic, H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron, this Club aims to enhance France's attractiveness among its primary ambassadors.
He is the Ambassador of the La-French Tech, the French Movement of Start-ups and Innovation in India.  Also, he is Technology and Innovation Expert at the Austrian Embassy  / Advantage Austria New Delhi and these roles have helped Ajay create strong ties between India and the EU.

Chief Executive Officer - Indian Chamber of commerce in Lithuania

Alina Adomaityte is the President of Indian Chamber of commerce in Lithuania. Alina has a diverse experience from working in senior government roles. She has organised several conference's for Indian companies and government, brought more than 10 Indian investors from India. She has also played a key role in supporting Indian students in Lithuania.  During the recent visit of Vice president of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, to Lithuania, she was guest honor in President place with Lithuanian President and Vice president of India

Ms Anaswara Kovithal - SWITZERLAND

Student Assistant to the Managing Director – Hertie School, Berlin

Anaswara Kovithal is a development professional and currently a Master’s in Public Policy student at Hertie School of Governance, Berlin. As Partnerships and Strategic Alliances lead at Gramin Health care, she created an army of women health ambassadors and entrepreneurs who are now championing last-mile delivery of healthcare in India. She has firsthand experience of harnessing the power of Industry, Government, and International Organisations in joining hands to impact health care access in rural India through social business models and partnerships. She represented innovation in health access and financing model at G20 Health Summit H20. As a Young Global Changer 2020, Anaswara works on enabling views from the developing world for Global Solutions Summit 2020 and fostering Indo-German relations in policy and governance through academic and research collaborations, industry partnerships, and knowledge creation.

Mr Benedikt Urban - AUSTRIA

Graduate Student- Central European University

Benedikt Urban was born and raised in Dharamsala, India. Growing up in the local Indian community while attending a Tibetan school in a town also known as exile home of the Dalai Lama, he acquired diverse insights of Tibetan and Indian cultures and gained fluency in English, Tibetan, Hindi and German. He has attempted use this background to play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the two uniquely different cultural and linguistic contexts to effectively enable a smooth execution of various academic programs, social projects and business activities in India. He recently founded blattglück; a company with the goal of helping people find nature based alternative solutions to everyday problem. In the long term he hopes to use this as an avenue to strengthen business ties between India and Europe in the health and wellness industry.

Clement is a member of the Conseillers au Commerce Exterieur de la France (Trade advisors for the French government) in Bangalore and member of the board of the French Tech Bangalore-India (Community-led development of the French Tech ecosystem across the world). He also has interests in two areas : One in the automative Industry through Cofacto (manufacturing of cooling systems for Railways and Power applications) and one in the FoodTech industry through Kingsmen Coffee in India and OOKA in France (sustainable distribution of coffee through tech-enabled coffee machines)

Ms Gabrella Burnel (Gaiea Sanskrit) - UK

Social Media Influencer

Gaiea Sanskrit  , orginally known as Gabrella Burnel , holds a degree in Sanskrit from the University of Oxford. Her promotion of ancient Indian language of #Sanskrit in UK has earned the nickname ‘the Cultural Ambassador of India in the UK’. She was part of the Living Bridge campaign by UK Govt and this campaign celebrates the unique ties between UK and India beyond the Government. She has been capturing the hearts of the Indians by singing Sanskrit songs. She Listens and learns from great teachers in India and England about Sanskrit, Mantra, Vedas and Sound, and then when the inspiration takes her, she shares these in song form. The songs carry within them something that seems to speak to the heart of the listeners in the West and the East, and somehow, they have become a bridge between India and the world.

Mr Gunjan Lodha - GERMANY

President - Indian Students' Association Bremerhaven

As someone who firmly believes in leading by setting an example Gunjan came to Germany as a student. After seeing the disheartening condition of the Indian students, he chose to co-found the Indian Students' Association Bremerhaven. Under his leadership, the association has served as a cultural as well as a professional exchange point. Innumerous social projects have been carried out, two of which are worth pointing out. First, an orientation programme for foreigners based on mentorship model and secondly, Partnered with Heidelberg Indian Students Association for waste segregation campaign in India.

Ian is the lead partner in the firm’s India Group, a dedicated group  helping to develop investment opportunities across the UK – India corridor which Ian has been involved in now for over 15 years.
He acts for a number of Indian businesses looking to expand into the UK advising and supporting them along the business journey. He regularly speaks on a number of panels about the opportunities collaboration between the two countries offers and is a frequent visitor to India. Ian also helped co-author a report with CII on how a full social security agreement would benefit both nations.

With a tailor shop in Pondicherry (India), they produce ethical and sustainable tote, shopping and string bags. Jonas is also a waste warrior and co-founder of Too Good To Go Belgium, a social impact company that connects users with delicious unsold food from a variety of shops and restaurants all over Europe. Ms Judith Weinberger-Singh - INDIA

Associate Director - European Business and Technology Centre

As Associate Director, Projects of the European Business and Technology Centre (Delhi), Judith has been contributing to Europe-India cooperation with focus on improving business ties by means of frameworks for business collaboration in clean tech sectors. As a team member of the secretariat of the European Economic Group (EEG) – the single European business voice in India -  and coordinator of the EU Excellence in India Programme, she closely interacts with representatives and stakeholders of the business support ecosystem as well as businesses in India and European countries to help implement the vision of effective internationalisation and business support by joining forces at a European level. Given her background in consulting with a focus on start-ups, Judith is an Ambassador of the German Indian Startup Exchange Program (GINSEP) which is a platform supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) to strengthen and foster exchange between India and Germany in the startup space. Judith is a German national who is a convinced European and passionate about multi-lateral cooperation that nurture global business ties and innovation.

In November 2017, he co-designed the India Tech Summit at the Houses of Parliament in partnership with the Europe-India Centre for Business and Industry with the event focused on promoting trade and collaboration between the UK-India Corridor. In 2018, he co-founded the national Super Connect Series match-making events across 9 cities across England with Hays, which over the years has welcomed tech startups, scale-ups, and SMEs from India to pitch, exhibit, speak or attend its events and subsequently super connected them to those to address their challenges. During this time, he's helped high-growth SMEs from India like Qapitol QA based in Bangalore to expand their operations and networks into the UK startup ecosystem creating new collaborations in the process and more recently has begun working with Wissen which has offices in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mumbai.

Dr Manu Sasidharan is a Post-Doctoral Research Associate within the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Manufacturing and Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. Working with colleagues within the Rural Roads Research Group at the University of Birmingham, he setup collaboration with India’s Ministry of Rural Development to establish a Global Centre of Excellence in Rural Roads. Dr Sasidharan consults for various government and non-governmental bodies on sustainable transport and road safety. He is a recipient of the Prestige Award for Young Researcher from the World Transport Research Society, Youth Delegate to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018, Mission Delegate for UK’s Department for International Trade outward railway mission to India 2020.

Pádraig works as the International Programmes Manager of The Hope Foundation (HOPE). HOPE is an Irish NGO that operates over 60 projects in Kolkata, India, working predominantly with street-connected and slum dwelling communities. HOPE operates projects under the programme ares of Protection, Education, Healthcare and Vocational Training. Pádraig holds an MA in International Relations from University College Cork and is a passionate advocate for human rights and international development. His work oversees the monitoring and evaluation of HOPE’s projects to ensure that they work with local communities to collaboratively create sustainable pathways out of poverty. He also works on HOPE’s governance to ensure HOPE maintains its compliance with the highest standards of best practice. As International Programmes Manager, Pádraig is HOPE’s representative for Dóchas - Ireland’s Association of Non-Governmental Organisations.

He is the Co-founder of the India-UK legal exchange programme which aims to the build a stronger understanding and rapport between lawyers of both Countries. He is the UK chair of the Indian National Association of legal professionals and the editor of the book "A Living Bridge: The UK-India Diaspora & The Rise of the Millennials". In 2018, Pranav co-convened the "India Inc, UK- India Young Leaders Forum" and was named in the UK-India top 100 most influential people list.

Inter-country Adoption Coordinator - International Adoption

Serena has a solid background on EU-India relations, holding an M.A. from the Centre for Modern Indian Studies in Göttingen and a B.A. in Languages and Cultures of South Asia from Cà Foscari University in Venice. Since 2008, she has been regularly traveling to India for studies, work and passion. In 2014, she lived in Delhi for studying at JNU. She works as Country Representative at International Adoption, the main Italian agency for intercountry adoptions in India. Serena manages the procedures and the staff in India, maintaining strong working relationships with the national and local authorities in both countries. Her aim is to promote children’s rights and advance gender equality.

Ms Shairee Malhotra - INDIA

Associate Researcher - European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS)

Shairee Malhotra is Europe Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) in New Delhi. Previously, Shairee gained several years experience working in Brussels - the headquarters of the European Union, at the European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS), and at the European External Action Service (EEAS) - the official foreign policy arm of the EU - where she was selected at a success rate of only 1% for non-EU nationals. She has published extensively on a variety of issues including on EU-India/UK-India relations, and also formulated talks on Indian foreign policy for the Belgian Navy, and on Indian elections for EU officials in her team. Shairee has specialisations in International Relations and Indian Foreign Policy from leading British universities. She is also a founding member of WICCI’s India-EU Business Council, a community of thirty female change-makers who are contributing to the growth of the India-EU corridor.

Mr Siddharth Mudgal - GERMANY

Founder & Chairman - German-Indian Business Forum

Siddharth Mudgal is District Party President of the ruling CSU party in Germany. He is President of GDIZ - German-Indian Association and also Chairman of the German-Indian Business Forum since 2016 which is a platform for high-ranking business leaders, politicians and business leaders to consult on policy matters of mutual interest. He was honored by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2017 for his strong contribution to furthering the relations between Germany and India. Siddharth Mudgal moved to Germany 17 years ago and holds a Masters Degree in Economics from the prestigious Humboldt University of Berlin.

PhD Candidate in Atmospheric Science - Luleå University of Technology

Thasshwin Mathanlal innovative approach to research earned him the Global Swede Award from Sweden's Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The Global Swede Award has provided him the excellent opportunity to be an ambassador between Swedish universities and the universities in India. He is a PhD candidate in Atmospheric Science, working with the Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. His field of expertise is in Space Instrumentation focusing on instrument development for space and planetary exploration. His research strategy emphasizes that research should not be bound by limitations of cost and infrastructure and he maximizes the use of commercial resources to meet the research objectives, without compromising the quality of research.

Valentina is a dancer & choreographer of Indian Dance Form of Bollywood and an enthusiastic student of south Asian cultures with a focus on Subcontinent in general. She graduated in Audiovisual Arts from the University of Roma 3 with a thesis on the role of dance in Hindi cinema. She attended European Erasmus Programme in Madrid, and travelled to United Kingdom where she could study, work and promote Indian communities of Europe. She has been travelling to India regularly for the past10 years and through her company, Apsaras Events, she provides Indian dance training, to help foreigner couples and clients with Indian roots to realize their weddings and events  in Italy.

Co founder and Board member - LeadCap Ventures

Vidyadhar Prabhudesai is the co founder of LeadCap Ventures with presence across Asia, Africa and Europe. LeadCap Ventures is the regional partner of Geneva based World Economic Forum and supports their research programs and engagement in India such as Global Competitiveness Index, Future of Jobs, Travel and Tourism. LeadCap also works closely with the forum and Govt of India to strengthen relations and economic cooperation. LeadCap also partners with EU based Horizon Group in development of Future Possibilities Index and dissemination of the outcome with Govt of India. He also shares a board seat at International Foundation for Sustainable Peace and Development, EU based international institution, with consultative status with UN - ECOSOC, promoting dialogue and mutual understanding, especially in the Black Sea Caspian Sea region of Europe. He currently heads their India office responsible for developing Global Sustainability Index which tracks country progess on major sustability parameters such as environment, economy, governance and social development.

Zane is a policy analyst focusing on the EU macro-regional governance, the EU science diplomacy towards the Southern Neighbourhood and the EU-India educational diplomacy in a broader context of the Asia-Europe Meeting. Zane has obtained professional experience as an international civil servant at the Secretariat of the Council of the Baltic Sea States and a national civil servant in Latvia. She is a graduate of KU Leuven (Belgium) and the University of Latvia (Latvia).
